"Forgiveness"
Be honest.....how good are you at forgiving? When someone's hurt you, how quickly can you forgive them? I know what you're thinking......"Well, it depends....it depends on what the other person did....it depends on who that person is....it depends on whether they've hurt me before...it depends on if they are truly sorry for what they did....." It just depends, right? You might even have someone in mind right now that you need to forgive. But it's hard and its complicated. God couldn't possibly understand how difficult forgiveness really is! Well let me tell you about someone just like you and I who had to forgive someone for an unthinkable hurt which they were given. His name is Joseph.
Joseph was the youngest of twelve brothers. And being the baby of the family, his father Jacob tended to give him special attention. In fact, Jacob gave Joseph a "coat of many colors" which Joseph wore all the time! How annoying must THAT have been for his siblings! One day, his brothers became so jealous that they hatched a plan to kill him. After some deliberation however, they decided to just pretend he had been killed by a wild animal and sell him into slavery in actuality. They sold him to a band of Midianites for twenty shekels of silver and brought his coat of many colors covered in goat's blood back to their father as proof that Joseph had been killed. Years later and after many turns of events, Jacob had found favor from Pharoah in Egypt due to his God-given ability to interpret dreams and had been appointed second in command in Egypt! He was in charge of the land and everyone in it must come to HIM for food......including his brothers who come to him in desperate need of food but not knowing it is actually their long lost brother they are asking help from! Joseph is faced with a choice. Forgive the very people who betrayed him in the most vile way and provide food for them; or deny their requests and let them starve treating them in the same way they had treated him. Put yourself in Joseph's shoes. Imagine the betrayal from the very people whom you trusted the most. Imagine the pain of never seeing your parents again. Imagine going from a normal life to a life of slavery! It makes our little hurts that we hold on to look pretty frivolous, doesn't it? So what did Joseph do?......exactly what God calls ALL of us to do.....FORGIVE UNCONDITIONALLY!!!! Let it go! Wipe the slate clean!! In Matthew 18:21-22 when Jesus was asked by Peter "Lord, how many times am I to forgive a brother or sister who sins against me?" Jesus replies by saying "not seven but seventy seven times" meaning infinitely! Everyone, every hurt, every time. Why? Because that's how God forgives those who have accepted Jesus into their heart. Everyone, every sin, every time.
Joseph gives us a great example of how forgiveness, though it may be hard, is possible in any and every situation. And Jesus gave an even more powerful example as he took nearly his last breath while dying on the cross and spoke the words "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." -Luke 23:34 In the highest moment of suffering, while bearing the sins of the world, Jesus's thought was to forgive the very people who put Him on that cross. Let THAT be our motivation next time we are faced with the challenge of forgiving someone for the hurt they have committed.
